i'm cayla. i'm good at a few things and i'm trying to learn the rest. i'm a theatre major with strong affections for writing, playing music, taking pictures, looking at pictures, being creative and getting inspired. i do not like driving in traffic or any size/species of spider.

I haven’t really blogged in a while. Blogged. Blogged. That’s a weird word, I don’t think I like it very much. Hm.
My break has been pleasant and busy and simple all at the same time and I have enjoyed myself entirely. It can be pretty accurately summed up by the above photos (a product of the obnoxious amount of Instagram-ing I’ve been doing-apologies for that) but I think I’l just give a brief synopsis of them anyhow.
Top left: Last Christmas my family and I drove to Charlotte for the day and had such a fancy little time we decided to repeat that this year. We spent the night in a quaint little hotel, woke up to a torrential downpour the next morning but traveled on despite it, and made our way to NoDa (North Davidson) for a few hours. The cutest little area: music venues (The Evening Muse), yoga studios, restaurants, a theatre, cafes, and THIS beautiful/drool-inducing apartment. Couldn’t help but try and plan my life around it. If that’s sad, I don’t really care.
Top Right: Spent the beginning of the break in Charleston with good ole Tom (Thomas, for those of you that don’t know his nick name) and his family. Always a nice time. We watched movies, drank too much Coke, had friendly-albeit sometimes cutthroat-games of ping pong, and spent a day downtown. I’m training him to like coffee but we’re in the early stages.
Bottom Left: I think I’m pretty terrible at having an internet personality, which is unfortunate for my band. If you read our website or look at our Facebook page, it would appear that I don’t really exist because I never write anything for us or update anyone on our progress…I’ve always had difficulty promoting my music because I feel like it’s annoying. I know, I have to get over it. And I’m trying. Or I will try.
The band is taking some very large steps and I’m excited and proud and pumped. We raised enough money through our Kickstarter campaign (thank you to all that donated!) to fund an album and we’ve been in the studio for a nice portion of the break so far. We’re recording with Eric McCoy of Archer Avenue studios, holla. It’s been like a job, 9-5 for five days straight (and only really tracking drums and bass) and it has been hilarious and awesome and tiring, but I’m so excited for the opportunity and the eventual final product to share with you guys. I’m proud of this one.
Bottom Right: I call this one: ‘Happy Girl in Glorious Chair’. But seriously. If you’ve seen any of my posts on here, I can guarantee you’ve seen my hopelessly longing posts for a fluffy white ‘Fat Chair’, as my family likes to call them. During our family trip to Charlotte yesterday, we made a casual (OKAY, so I have been dying/whining to go back) trip to IKEA and I made a purchase that will change my life as I know it: this chair. Yes, the change may be that I get fatter because I never want to leave it (I’ve been reading/tumbling/coffee drinking in it for the last few hours) but I will be happy, I know it. I can feel it. Can you be in love with a chair? I think so.
So a Merry Christmas/Updated Life post, I give you. I’m excited for the New Year, and I wish you all the happiest of holidays. Cheers!
Saw this at the Nick tonight.
Tribe is on repeat for me right now.
Emily and I played a show together the other night. Evidence of our “unbearable awkwardness”/my favorite from the night.
Patty Griffin, I will always love you.
I’m playing a show on Saturday night with Emily McCollum and I could not be more excited. Seriously. This girl is a mighty talented force and she’s not even out of high school yet. The first time I heard her play, I was mesmerized, to put it simply and the EP she released back in October has rightfully earned it’s place in my driving CD’s rotation. We started playing around with the idea of writing some stuff together and may even be pulling it all together for some recording over the summer. Anyway, if you’re from the area, come check us out Saturday night and bring some friends, have a blasty and hang out with us afterwards.
Also, if you didn’t get a chance to read the new articles/short story on The Ground Floor, check it out here: http://www.groundfloormag.com!
For this week we decided to shake things up a bit. Throw off the groove, get a little outta line, if you will. Each of us took a different section than what we’re used to writing, and tried our best to roll with it. All of these cats are tremendous writers. This week, I took Music, Cam took Literature, Andrew took Fashion and Mel took Sports. Mine wasn’t necessarily a stretch and I’ll say I got a bit sentimental writing it. You can check my article out here: SUPER SENTIMENTAL MUSIC WRITE UP THAT MADE DAD CRY. Be sure to check out everyone else’s while you’re at it, they won’t disappoint.
This video is our latest installment based upon our Role Reversals for the week. With love, from The Ground Floor.
A little behind the scenes action of the recording process during Christmas break. These guys make 8 hour days in the studio fun. Also: SO EXCITED TO GET THIS ALBUM OUT.
WATCH LE VIDEO, SPREAD THE WORD (IGNORE THE WAY I TALK WITH MY HANDS).
Normally, I’m not very good at self-promotion and all that jazz, but this is a very important project to my bandmates and I. We were a little hesitant about setting up a Kickstarter in the first place (we all hate being bombarded by things on Facebook asking for money and such, so we PROMISE we won’t do that) but these are the next few steps for us, and we’re really excited to get there.
So if you know our music or any of us and would like to help us fund our next real project, you can donate here. If not, we appreciate any kind of support, like…reblogging this video!
Cheers, all!
So, Emily McCollum and I played that show together last night and instead of doing two different sets, we just decided to share the stage and switch off…a little show in the round, if you will. We had gotten together earlier that afternoon to run over some stuff that we could play together and…this is what happened. A little Dixie Chicks, some mandolin and a computer because neither of us are good at remembering words (even to our own songs).

steven fiore - you can always come home
steven opened for mike at the lovely few release show/party/gathering/thing. and this song is rad. if you don’t know steven, you should. you should also check out some of his side projects…like david and goliath (if you have a soft heart) or young alumni (if you’re a rockdork).
this song makes me cry.
WHAT. Why in heavens name was I not here for this? Three of my favorite local-ish artists in one room and I wasn’t there.
This is absolutely beautiful. Also, Nick Bays I miss playing music with you.
